For those that like to explore, there are a number of ancient stone way-markers which often take the form of a cross nearby. These were used as landmarks for travellers and sometimes to signify land boundaries.

The villages of Castleton, Danby, Lealholm and Glaisdale offer the usual facilities including pubs, tearooms and shops. The Moors National Park Centre in Danby is well worth a visit to find out all about the National Park and holds various exhibitions and events throughout the year.
