Close to the spectacular ruins of Byland Abbey, a stunning monastery constructed in 1135 and hailed as one of the best examples of 12th century churches in Europe, Wass is the perfect place for enjoying a self-catering break in Yorkshire. Surrounded by breathtaking countryside and located at the foot of Wass Bank, the village is an ideal base for a walking holiday in the North York Moors. The village benefits from having a local pub which serves great food and a great sense of community.

In the neighbouring village of Kilburn is The Mouseman Visitor Centre, a showcase for Richard "Mousey" Thompson's oak furniture, characterised by a small carved mouse on each piece. On the hillside above the village is Yorkshire's only chalk sculpture, a white horse which can be reached on foot on an easy access path from the North York Moors National Park Centre at Sutton Bank. Another neighbouring village is Ampleforth, with its Abbey and popular leisure centre.

The local towns of Thirsk and Helmsley have a great variety of shops, eateries and attractions. Amongst the most popular are the World of James Herriot Museum, which celebrates the life and work of Alf Wight, better known as the author of the James Herriot books, and Helmsley Castle, Walled Garden and Bird of Prey centre.
