Gilling East cottages

Located on the edge of North York Moors in the Howardian Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Gilling East is the ideal place to take a relaxing self-catering break. The village has a great local pub and restaurant, the Fairfax Arms, and Ampleforth Golf Club, in the grounds of Gilling Castle, is close by. The model railway in the village hall is well worth a visit; on Sundays you can even ride the model trains! The area takes its name from Castle Howard, a magnificent historic house with superb gardens, grounds and arboretum.

The market town of Helmsley is just six miles away and has a wonderful mix of independent shops including a supermarket so you can pick up your essentials, plus a wonderful choice of tearooms, pubs and restaurants. The town has a market every Friday and visitor attractions include Helmsley Walled Garden, Helmsley Castle, the national Bird of Prey Centre at Duncombe Park, and an open air swimming pool in the summer months. The historic city of York, just 40 minutes away, offers everything you would expect from a major city, from designer boutiques and independent shops to the usual high street stores. There are plenty of attractions to delight in York as well, such as the York Minster, The Chocolate Experience and the Railway Museum. A walk around the city's walls is the best way to take in the stunning architecture of this ancient city.
