The popular village of Rosedale Abbey lies in the heart of the North York Moors National Park. Despite the name, there never was an abbey but rather a small Cistercian nunnery which flourished until the 16th century. In the 1800s the village became a centre for ironstone production and the population grew to nearly 3,000. The kilns, used for heating and breaking up the ironstone can still be seen around the dale but the chimney which gave Chimney Bank, one of the Moors most notorious hills, its name has now gone. Today the village welcomes visitors who come to enjoy the area, and walkers and cyclists who want to experience the challenging landscapes. To appreciate the village's heritage, take a walk around the head of the dale along the route of the rail track that was used to transport the ironstone out of the valley, enjoying spectacular views along the way.

For a bit of fun, visit the nine hole golf course, the highest course on the moors with stunning views across the dale. Rosedale Show is held in August each year and includes classes for farm livestock, horses, crafts and much more. Within the village, there is a shop where you can pick up the essentials and a choice of pubs which serve food and tearooms.

Pickering is the nearest town, 10 miles away, which has several supermarkets, shops, pubs and restaurants. Visitor attractions include the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, Beck Isle Museum of Rural Life and Pickering Castle. The moorland villages of Cropton, Hutton-le-Hole, Egton Bridge and Danby are nearby, all great places to visit, and it is only a forty minute drive to Whitby. During the summer months a Moors Bus runs between lots of the villages.
