Explore the North York Moors from Goathland

One of the best ways to enjoy the heather-clad moorland of the North York Moors National Park is by hopping aboard a NYMR steam train and travelling in style through the countryside to either Pickering in one direction or Whitby in the other. The village is also a fantastic base for exploring some of the area's most beautiful walking routes. Explore Wheeldale Moor, which contains the remains of a historic Roman road, and hike along the Rail Trail to Grosmont. This lovely walk will take you through the hamlet of Beck Hole, where you can sample something delicious at Birch Hall Inn, North Yorkshire’s smallest and prettiest pub.

Around a mile from Goathland is the enchanting Mallyan Spout, the highest waterfall in the North York Moors. You can also walk through woodland from Mallyan Spout to the magical Thomason Foss or take a short drive to Falling Foss Tea Garden and play pooh sticks from the wooden bridge above May Beck. After a day of exploring, relax in one of Goathland's traditional pubs or venture to nearby villages such as Grosmont and Egton. The Yorkshire coast is also within easy reach, with Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay and Sandsend offering sandy beaches, independent shops and excellent seafood restaurants. Once day turns to night the dark skies of Goathland are just right for stargazing, especially while relaxing in the bubbles at a hot tub holiday cottage.
