Middleham offers a real taste of North Yorkshire life, situated in Wensleydale by the River Ure and River Cover, this stunning market town is steeped in history. The town has a magnificent castle with a viewing platform that boasts fantastic views over the Dales. The castle is now roofless but is otherwise well preserved, giving visitors a fascinating insight into its history. Middleham is famous for its association with Richard III, with the castle being Richard’s childhood home, and more recently has become a hub for the horse racing industry, given its proximity to 15 northern racecourses, with horses passing through the village each day. Middleham now offers an annual open stables event every easter weekend, allowing visitors to see behind the scenes and meet the horses.
The town’s shops and pubs surround the cobbled market square and there is plenty to choose from, from relaxed pub meals to fine bistro dining- there’s a great choice to suit all appetites. There’s also a great mix of independent shops to browse, from antiques and collectables to grocers selling fresh local produce, you’ll have a great time pottering around the town. The town is also ideally located to access some of the Dales’ other market towns, Leyburn is only 5 minutes away by car whereas Richmond is just over 20 minutes away, making Middleham an ideal base to explore the Yorkshire Dales.
