Glaisdale cottages

Glaisdale is a pretty village spaciously located across this picturesque dale in the North York Moors National Park. In the 19th century, Glaisdale was an ironstone-mining village but little remains of the industrial past except the slate roofed terraced houses which housed the miners. The ancient pack horse bridge, known as Beggar's Bridge is close to the railway station, and dates from the early 1600s. Today the village is connected to nearby villages and to the towns of Whitby and Middlesbrough by the Esk Valley railway. The village pub serves locally sourced food and a selection of beers and wine. Glaisdale is the birthplace of the author Peter Walker, better known as Nicholas Rhea, who wrote the Constable series of books which inspired the TV series Heartbeat, and was filmed in the nearby village of Goathland.

Many scenic walks pass through the village including Wainwright's Coast to Coast walk and the Esk Valley walk. There is a very pretty local walk to Egton Bridge through Arncliffe Woods, which takes you along the old packhorse way made of stone trods.
