Property code: OC-27113

One of a pair of skilfully restored farm buildings, this two-bedroomed holiday hideaway sits on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors and is only 13 miles from the coast. Explore the market towns, moorland landscapes and forest on your doorstep, then return home to a peaceful country retreat with high-end interiors and a pretty courtyard garden.

Idyllically located in the village of Allerston, this single-storey property is approached via a tree-lined driveway with lovely views across the surrounding fields. Once inside, a striking exposed timber beam adds an authentically rustic ambience to the open-plan living space where underfloor heating ensures a warm welcome whatever the weather. Stretch out on your choice of sofa with a favourite movie for your entertainment, share cooking duties in the sleek kitchen and linger over lively conversation around the farmhouse-style dining suite – this room really will be at the heart of your holiday. When it’s time to sleep, simply wander across the hallway and you’ll find two bedrooms – one a king-size, the other a twin – and a contemporary shower room. Outside, the walled courtyard garden – shared with the neighbouring property – has picnic tables and BBQs. There’s space to store bicycles too.

Just 5 miles away, the pretty market town of Pickering (5 miles) is the embarkation point for journeys on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway – jump on the train here for a 24-mile ride through dramatic scenery. At Grosmont station, you can connect with the Esk Valley Line and travel onwards to Whitby, which would otherwise be a 23-mile drive. Malton (11.5 miles) has quaint cobbled streets and historic buildings and is known as Yorkshire’s food capital. Similarly, you’ll find a wealth of restaurants, gastropubs and independent stores to suit every taste in Helmsley (18 miles). Alternatively, let off steam in Dalby Forest where there are numerous walking, running and cycling trails plus a Go Ape treetop challenge course. For contrast, drive a similar distance south to see a contemporary garden by renowned Dutch landscape designer Piet Oudolf and Scampston Hall, one of the finest regency country houses in North Yorkshire.

We really enjoyed our stay at Baggins Burrow, the property was a good size for a family of 4 and with underfloor heating it was nice a toasty when required. Both Arthur and Mary were very warm and welcoming and had left some eggs, milk, teabags and biscuits for us on our arrival. We would definitely recommend this cottage and will be booking it agaRead morein when were next up in North Yorkshire. Hide

The property was quite comfy and cosy but we were disappointed. Firstly, the lack of a nice view - you can only see farm buildings from its 3 windows, the fields are only visible from Bilbos Barn. Also, we did not receive a welcome pack. The owners were away when we arrived, but someone had been in to clean. All that was left was a couple of teabagRead mores by the teapot and a bottle of rose wine in the fridge. There was no milk for tea and no cake or biscuits. The location was very good for exploring.
