When conditions are right the Yorkshire Coast offers some awesome surf spots for novices and experts alike, many of which are rock free and crowd free, making it now one of the top UK surf destinations. The best time of year to visit for a surfing break is between October and March which is when you'll experience the best waves, however anytime of year is possible. Head to surf spots The Point, Bunkers and Pumphouse in Cayton Bay between Scarborough and Filey on the East Coast for some fantastic waves. The wide sweeping bay of Scarborough offers year round surfing options suitable for all levels and abilities. South Bay in Scarborough is ideal for learner waves and is popular with families and Scarborough's North Bay boasts a beautiful sandy family beach but is also the venue for the UK Surf Pro Tour event.
The long stretch of Blug Flag awarded sandy beach which runs from the picturesque village of Sandsend to the historic fishing town of Whitby also offers some great surf spots which are often less crowded than those mentioned above. Plus further up the coast you'll find exhilarating waves at Saltburn-by-the-Sea.
With its varied coastline boasting some of the UK's finest beaches the East Coast of Yorkshire is an ideal location for a surfing holiday. And don't worry if you're not an experienced surfer and don't have any gear, the Yorkshire Coast boasts numerous surf schools and equipment hire that you can use on your Yorkshire break.
Alternatively if you fancy something a little different, then why not try stand up paddle boarding? It's a great way to see more of Yorkshire's finest coastline. Although it is a relatively new sport there are now lots of places along the coast offering lessons.
