Accessibility Guide for Garden Cottage

Garden Cottage is a two-storey terraced cottage located in the upper part of Settle.

Pre-arrival and local facilities:

Arrival and Parking

  • The main entrance to Garden Cottage is located on Victoria Street, which is a well-used road requiring access for farm vehicles at all times. Although there is a designated outside the cottage this is not always available to visitors especially during busy times of the year.
  • Parking is suitable for a small/medium car.
  • Parking surface is paved and on top of a hill
  • The distance to the nearest public parking area is 0.2miles and is pay and display.

Main Entrance

  • The front door is 910mm wide and enters into the lounge down a 70mm step. There is a small boot room just off the lounge, this doorway is 600mm.
  • The lounge and hall way are carpeted.
  • From the lounge there is a doorway, this is 700mm wide, leading onto a small hallway (760mm wide). To the right of this there is access to the kitchen, down a 180mm step.
  • The height of the fridge is 850mm. The oven and sink are 900 mm height.  The kitchen has a tiled floor.

Outdoor Facilities

  • Access to the rear garden is through a stable door (750mm wide) down a 210mm step and this leads on to a small paved patio, the path to the rear of the garden is very narrow (570mm wide)
  • Garden table and four chairs are situated on the patio area.
  • There is outside lighting. The garden is narrow, with a brick wall on one side and fencing on the other.

First Floor

  • There are 12 steep stairs from the hallway to the first floor. This floor comprises landing (carpeted) bathroom, double and single bedrooms.
  • The bathroom comprises a wash hand basin, toilet and bath with shower over, access through this door is 590mm and is a small room with laminate flooring.
  • The double bedroom door is 690mm and is carpeted.
  • The single room is small with a door opening of 690mm and is carpeted.
  • The only bathroom facilities are on this floor.


  • The cottage has no landline or Wi-Fi facilities, mobile phone reception is good.
  • The closes public telephone is 0.2 miles away.
  • No electrical sockets are set at wheelchair height and can be accessed without furniture being moved.
  • Other than the smoke alarms there are no speciality alarms fitted in the cottage.
  • As the cottage is situated in the upper part of Settle the cottage is built on quite a steep hill, which would not suit guests who have difficulty walking.


Nestling in a quiet backwater yet within easy reach of all the amenities of the market town of Settle,  Garden Cottage is full of character, dating back to the 1850's, with lots of original features.  It's an ideal holiday home for couples or small families being centrally based for touring the whole of the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District.  With "sneck" doors throughout, a cosy lounge with a wood-burning stove and beamed ceiling and a country-style kitchen with red-tiled floor, Belfast sink, pine cupboards and dresser you will find that the owners have taken great care to ensure there is everything you need for a comfortable, cosy holiday in a traditional Dales cottage.  The door from the kitchen leads out to an enclosed garden at the rear of the cottage, a welcome retreat in which to relax and enjoy planning your holiday.

The market in this bustling little town is held every Tuesday - this is when Settle is at its liveliest!  Why not have a browse round the stalls with their vast variety of goods or perhaps a stroll through the streets and ginnels, leading to many local shops, tearooms and pubs serving good food.

Area Information

Take a trip on the famous Settle - Carlisle steam railway which runs through some of the most picturesque scenery in the North of England, a great day out, especially for train enthusiasts or photographers.  Also, for the more adventurous, a thrilling time can be spent climbing the Three Peaks - Whernside, Ingleborough and Penyghent, all around 700 metres high.  We think there's more than enough to keep you amused during your stay in this wonderful, scenic area but don't just take our word for it, come and see for yourself!
