Self-catering cottages in Hackness

Hackness is in a fantastic location, being within the North York Moors National Park and the pretty Forge Valley on the edge of Dalby, the Great Yorkshire Forest. The Venerable Bede wrote in the 8th century of Hackness as the site of a double monastery or nunnery. Also from around the 8th century, there are the remains of a High Cross, kept in the Church of Saint Peter, parts of which date from the 11th century. The village boasts a tennis club, founded in 1923, with grass and tarmac courts.

The short drive to Scarborough is well worth making for the several beaches, high street stores, the Sea Life Centre and Peasholm Park where you can take a swan boat out for for a row on a large boating lake. There are also a series of live musical performances at Scarborough Open Air Theatre and orchestral performances at Scarborough Spa, where you can still catch the original Victorian cliff lift to the South Bay beach below.

Robin Hood's Bay, always popular with visitors, lies just up the coast. There are large Sea Captain's houses at the top of the bay alongside cafes and restaurants whilst, down in the bay there are lots of old fisherman's cottages reached via twisting cobbled alleyways, quirky gift shops and plenty of eating places. Further on is Whitby, well known for its maritime heritage links to Captain Cook, and for it's abbey and as the inspiration for Dracula.
