Area Information
Skinningrove
Skinningrove is set between Saltburn and Staithes. The village had it routes in agriculture and fishing until the opening of the ironstone workings in 1848. Visit the Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum where on August 7th, 1848, the first mine in Cleveland opened in Skinningrove. It was the first of 83 ironstone mines in the region. Ultimately, they would dispatch iron worldwide, building railways and bridges all across Europe, Africa, America, India and even the Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia. Skinningrove has a lovely secluded sand and shingle beach offering fine views and is intersected by a rocky pier dating back to its mining history. Only a short drive down the coast you will find the small fishing port of Staithes a step back in time with its quaint shops, tea rooms selling local produce and pubs serving serving hearty meals. The village has an interesting Arts and Heritage Festival each year in September. Further down the coast is the historic town of Whitby hosting events throughout the year and lots of bars and restaurants to choose from. Dalby Forest a great day out with mountain bike cycle trails for families or specially designed tracks catering for all abilities. A great day out for all the family. The North York Moors railway runs from Pickering to Whitby through the beautiful North York Moors calling at Levisham Goathland and Grosmont you can alight at each station and do a circular walk or just enjoy the ride.
Loftus
Lying between the North York Moors National Park and the bustling seaside resort of Saltburn-on-Sea with its Victorian pier, cliff lift, and gardens, the small town of Loftus provides the perfect base for exploring the best of town and country. Here you are within easy reach of the attractions of the Yorkshire Coast. The quirky and quaint seaside port of Staithes is under 5 miles away where you will find a mix of local, independent shops, tea rooms and pubs serving fresh local food lining the ancient cobbled streets as well as a sandy beach and annual arts and heritage festival which draws visitors from far and wide. Head down into the North York Moors to be delighted by the seemingly never-ending carpet of beautiful purple heather, with rolling hills and sweeping valleys stretching for as far as the eye can see. This proximity to stunning coastal and countryside landscapes makes Loftus the ideal location for walkers and families looking to take in the fresh air and thrills this part of Yorkshire has to offer while also remaining within easy reach of the larger towns such as Whitby, Guisborough (with its Priory and Forest) and the city of Middlesborough.
