Fun for all the family in Whitby

Family fun at the beach

Looking for some family fun? Then look no further than Whitby, which will keep you and yours entertained come rain or shine.

The first port of call for a trip to the seaside is usually the beach and why not? Whitby has one of just three blue flag beaches on the Yorkshire coast. With a vast beach and sweeping sands it is the perfect place for a kick about with the kids, maybe a spot of cricket or failing that, grab a couple of fishing nets from the local beach shops and dabble in the rock pools or go fossil hunting. If you are lucky you might even come across some Whitby jet.

Having passed the morning, head into town and take the family for a burger at American diner, Emma’s Diner, where you can plan another action packed afternoon.

Whitby Museum is a hidden gem, telling Whitby’s long history with artefacts ranging from whaling tools, to stuffed seabirds and coastal clothing. The Captain Cook Museum tells the story of the legendary explorer and those with nerves of steel should brave the Dracula experience.

But, if you want to get away from the bustling crowds then take a short drive to the family run Beacon Farm ice cream parlour. There are dozens of flavours available which have been made on site and there is a bouncy castle and playroom too.

As night falls it doesn’t spell the end of the family fun but it does get spookier. Meet at the historic whale bones and head off on one of the town’s ghost walks where you can meet some of the more supernatural residents tucked away Whitby’s secret streets and hideaways.

And, of course, no trip to the seaside would be complete without a stint spending the rest of the kids’ pocket money in the slot machines and rounding it all off with a traditional fish and chip supper.

No matter how large or small your brood, and whether it’s a last minute weekend break or your main summer holiday, Ingrid Flute’s Holiday Cottages will be able to find the ideal accommodation to suit all the family.
