What a wonderful bonus, especially on a day like this!</span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>So as a birthday treat to myself I decided to visit the part of the North York Moors National Park where I grew up, a small village called Levisham. There is a fantastic walk from there to the Hole of Horcum and back over the beautiful moors, with absolutely fantastic views. If you park in the village and head up the lane on the right of The Horseshoe Inn pub you're soon on the open moorland. The walk is almost 6 miles and has a couple of climbs such as up the side of the amazing Hole of Horcum; but the views are totally worth it! You then walk along a wide moorland track over the moors  alongside an iron age dyke to Dundale Pond. As kids we used to think it was bottomless. Now it is a sheltered spot to rest for a few minutes before finishing the walk back at levisham. The Horseshoe Inn is very welcoming with great food and well worth visiting. </span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>I hope you enjoy the photos or can visit this stunning part of yorkshire soon, we have lots of beautiful cottages available <a href="https://www.yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/north-york-moors">here</a>.</span></span></span></span></span></p> <figure role="group"><img alt="The Horseshoe Inn" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="b030d550-9e56-43d0-96be-7482342d38fa" src="/sites/yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/files/inline-images/1.png" /><figcaption>The Horseshoe Inn</figcaption></figure><figure role="group"><img alt="Levisham" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="d40068b6-c553-4c3d-af97-8b7bf54ba67e" src="/sites/yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/files/inline-images/2.png" /><figcaption>The village of Levisham</figcaption></figure><figure role="group"><img alt="North York Moors" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="1c689ea6-52e0-49a2-9b54-024f5bd97d3e" src="/sites/yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/files/inline-images/3.png" /><figcaption>The beautiful North York Moors</figcaption></figure><figure role="group"><img alt="Betsy" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="322d2b6f-2a9e-44a0-9a42-9263fde5b1d8" src="/sites/yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/files/inline-images/4.png" /><figcaption>My dog Betsy enjoying the walk</figcaption></figure><figure role="group" class="align-left"><img alt="Hole of Horcum" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="614d7837-3ee2-4b63-a0ef-a626916456c5" height="191" src="/sites/yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/files/inline-images/7.jpg" width="143" /><figcaption>The Hole of Horcum</figcaption></figure><p> </p> </div> <div class="field-wrapper field field-node--field-tags field-name-field-tags field-type-entity-reference field-label-hidden"> <ul class="field-items tocc__itemlist tocc__itemlist--inline" data-prefix="Tags"> <li class="field-item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/20" hreflang="en">Walking</a></li> <li class="field-item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/24" hreflang="en">Countryside and Villages</a></li> <li class="field-item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/13" hreflang="en">Activities</a></li> </ul> </div> <a href="/taxonomy/term/5" hreflang="en">Places To Visit</a> <a href="/taxonomy/term/2" hreflang="en">Things To Do</a> Fri, 13 Sep 2019 12:16:21 +0000 Ms Louise Burtt 618 at http://www.yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk A Weekend in Yorkshire http://www.yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/blog/2019/09/a-weekend-in-yorkshire <span class="field-wrapper">A Weekend in Yorkshire</span> <span class="field-wrapper"><span lang="" about="/user/1332" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">Ms Louise Burtt</span></span> <span class="field-wrapper">Wed, 09/11/2019 - 12:19</span> <div class="field-wrapper field field-node--field-banner-images field-name-field-banner-images field-type-image field-label-hidden"> <section class="block block-system block-system-breadcrumb-block"> <nav role="navigation" aria-labelledby="system-breadcrumb"> <span id="system-breadcrumb" class="visually-hidden">You are here</span> <ul class="oc-breadcrumb"> <li> <a href="/">Home</a> </li> <li> <a href="/taxonomy/term/2">Things To Do</a> </li> <li class="current"><a href="#"></a></li> </ul> </nav> </section> <div class="field-items tocc__herobanner"> <div class="tocc__tile tocc__tile--large field-item"> <div class="tocc__tile__image" style="background-image: url(/sites/yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/files/styles/page_banner/public/2019-09/Short%20break%20blog%20banner.png?itok=_KzDaDCN);"></div> </div> </div> </div> <div> <h4>Just a few days in Yorkshire will leave you refreshed, relaxed and ready to tell friends and family what a great time you've had.</h4> <h3>So if I was spending a weekend away in Yorkshire what would I do?</h3> <h3><img alt="Helmsley Walled Gardens" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="d0efcae4-736d-4a5f-adf0-73254ea3a853" src="/sites/yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/files/inline-images/short%20break%201.png" /></h3> <h2>VISIT</h2> <p>I'd discover more about wonderful Yorkshire at some of its fascinating and diverse heritage sites. <strong>Helmsley Castle and Walled Garden</strong>, the<strong> Dales Countryside Museum </strong>in Hawes and <strong>The Ryedale Folk Museum</strong> in the quaint village of Hutton Le Hole on the North York Moors are some of my favourites. If I was visiting the Yorkshire Coast then a trip to <strong>The Captain Cook Museum</strong> in Whitby and <strong>Scarborough Castle</strong> would be on the cards.</p> <h2><img alt="Theme Parks and Attractions" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="f4106933-ea2f-4728-84f0-23109b74aaf9" src="/sites/yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/files/inline-images/short%20break4.png" /></h2> <h2>ENJOY</h2> <p>I'd spend time with my family, young and old, enjoying some of Yorkshire's amazing theme parks and visitor attractions. There's so much fun to be had throughout Yorkshire but some of my favourite places are the <strong>Jorvik Viking Centre</strong> in York, the <strong>Sea Life Centre</strong> in Scarborough and the traditional amusement arcades in some of Yorkshire's wonderful seaside towns. For exhilarating rides I'd spend a day at <strong>Lightwater Valley</strong> theme park near Ripon or <strong>Flamingo Land</strong> theme park near Malton. Or for a more unique attraction I'd explore the labyrinth of tunnels and walkways at <strong>The Forbidden Corner</strong> in Leyburn Yorkshire Dales.</p> <h2><img alt="Flamborough Head" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="c4766b6c-1075-4bab-ba86-db869eefc7ea" src="/sites/yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/files/inline-images/short%20break6.png" /></h2> <h2>WALK</h2> <p>I'd put on my walking boots, get out and about and discover Yorkshire's wealth of natural beauty. On my way for a walk along the glorious sandy beach at <strong>Saltburn-by-the-Sea </strong>I'd stop off on the North York Moors for a wander around the reservoir at <strong>Scaling Dam</strong>, or I'd venture over to <strong>Flamborough Head </strong>to spot puffins and other fascinating wildlife. Over in  <strong>Bronte Country</strong> I'd walk the <strong>Pennine Way</strong> to Top Withens and explore the inspiration for Wuthering Heights.</p> <h2><img alt="Pannett Art Gallery" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="9082aa6c-d7f3-4f78-9ac2-8a346109f4bf" src="/sites/yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/files/inline-images/short%20break7.png" /></h2> <h2>ADMIRE</h2> <p>I'd indulge in my love of art and discover an array of creativity throughout Yorkshire. From the breathtaking sculptures at the <strong>Yorkshire Sculpture Park </strong>to the fine art on display at the <strong>Mercer Gallery</strong> in Harrogate and the constantly changing selection of local art at <strong>The Herriot Gallery</strong> in Hawes. Located within beautiful settings the <strong>Inspired By</strong> gallery at The North York Moors National Park Centre, the <strong>Pannett Park Art Gallery</strong> in Whitby, the canal-side gallery of <strong>Mill Bridge </strong>in Skipton and <strong>The Station</strong> in Richmond set within a beautiful riverside Victorian railway building are also all well worth a visit.</p> <h2><img alt="Shop for local delicacies" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="f134483e-2786-4521-bdac-832b04647eb8" src="/sites/yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/files/inline-images/short%20break8.png" /></h2> <h2>SHOP</h2> <p>You can't come to Yorkshire without treating yourself to some of the amazing local produce on offer in the boutique shops, market stalls and delicatessens across the region. I personally love the unique pieces of jewellery crafted using black <strong>Whitby Jet</strong>, so I'd head to Whitby's old town cobbled streets to find my favourite piece. I'd then browse some of the local markets and delicatessens to pick up some homemade delicacies to enjoy back in my cottage after a busy day out and about. Two of my favourite Yorkshire delis have to be <strong>Weetons in Harrogate </strong>and <strong>Hunters of Helmsley.</strong> I also love browsing the little <strong>market in Leyburn</strong>, held every Friday, as well as the handmade chocolates from <strong>Inspired Chocolate</strong>.</p> <h2><img alt="Cycle around Dalby Forrest" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="080da3a1-834f-47cb-994d-43f81dada0fc" src="/sites/yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/files/inline-images/short%20break3.png" /></h2> <h2>GET ACTIVE</h2> <p>I know holidays are meant to be relaxing but I always find I need something to blow the cobwebs away on my break, so I'd head to <strong>Dalby Forest</strong> in the North York Moors and enjoy a walk or ride along one of its numerous trails. There's also a <strong>Go Ape </strong>treetop challenge there if you're feeling adventurous. The <strong>Cinder Track </strong>from Whitby to Scarborough is another favourite of mine for a bike ride or walk, taking in some beautiful scenery and coastal villages such as Robin Hoods Bay and Ravenscar along the way. If you're looking for something a bit more exhilarating then <strong>How Stean Gorge </strong>near Harrogate is great for gorge walking, potholing and rock climbing, or <strong>Camphill Estate Bedale</strong> has quad biking, clay pigeon shooting, 4x4 off road driving experiences and zip wires.</p> <h2><img alt="Magpie Cafe Whitby" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="bba86e8c-0f33-4e9f-9572-d8e9b71eafd5" src="/sites/yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/files/inline-images/short%20break9.png" /></h2> <h2>EAT</h2> <p>As a bit of a "foodie" a weekend away for me is often centred around good food, whether it be tea and cake in the afternoon or a slap up meal in the evening. For delicious homemade cakes I'd head to <strong>KTea's Tearoom</strong> in Leyburn, <strong>Botham's </strong>in Whitby and of course the famous<strong> Bettys</strong> tearooms. A visit to the Yorkshire Coast wouldn't be complete without fish and chips from <strong>The Magpie Cafe</strong> or <strong>Trenchers </strong>in Whitby. For a special occasion I'd definitely choose to dine at the 3AA rosette restaurant at <strong>Yorebridge House</strong> in Bainbridge, <strong>The Angel at Hetton</strong> near Skipton or the Michelin-starred <strong>Black Swan at Oldstead.</strong> And for something a bit different there's also the fantastic Pullman dining train, where you can enjoy afternoon tea or dinner on board the <strong>North York Moors Steam Railway</strong>.</p> <h2><img alt="Refreshing drink in the pub" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="c0d198b3-3458-46aa-9f65-3b97cbb27b54" src="/sites/yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/files/inline-images/short%20break5.png" /></h2> <h2>DRINK</h2> <p>Yorkshire is well known for its brewing tradition and you can enjoy many a brewery tour around the region at the <strong>Black Sheep Brewery </strong>in Ripon, <strong>Theakston Brewery</strong> in Masham and the <strong>Cropton Brewery </strong>on the North York Moors, amongst many others. If you're after a pint with a view then <strong>The Lion Inn at Blakey Ridge</strong> on the North York Moors has scenery on another level, but be careful not to get cut off by snow if visiting in winter! <strong>The Green Dragon Inn Hardraw </strong>is also worth stopping off at on the way to visiting the stunning Hardraw Force waterfall. I myself prefer a G&amp;T or a cocktail, so I'd have to recommend somewhere like the <strong>Moon &amp; Sixpence</strong> which overlooks the beautiful harbour in Whitby.</p> <h2><img alt="Rose Cottage, Huggate" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="54c369fa-d25b-412c-bf0a-ae074794ab4d" src="/sites/yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/files/inline-images/shortbreak2.png" /></h2> <h2>SLEEP</h2> <p>Whether it's a long weekend away or a mid-week refresher we've got plenty of great cottages for you to choose from. Find your <a href="https://www.yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/yorkshire/short-breaks-in-yorkshire">short break</a> now.</p> </div> <div class="field-wrapper field field-node--field-tags field-name-field-tags field-type-entity-reference field-label-hidden"> <ul class="field-items tocc__itemlist tocc__itemlist--inline" data-prefix="Tags"> <li class="field-item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/6" hreflang="en">Attractions</a></li> <li class="field-item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/29" hreflang="en">Food and Drink</a></li> <li class="field-item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/37" hreflang="en">Art</a></li> <li class="field-item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/13" hreflang="en">Activities</a></li> <li class="field-item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/3" hreflang="en">Family Fun</a></li> </ul> </div> <a href="/taxonomy/term/5" hreflang="en">Places To Visit</a> <a href="/taxonomy/term/2" hreflang="en">Things To Do</a> Wed, 11 Sep 2019 12:19:23 +0000 Ms Louise Burtt 617 at http://www.yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk Yorkshire's Hidden Gems http://www.yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/blog/2019/05/yorkshires-hidden-gems <span class="field-wrapper">Yorkshire&#039;s Hidden Gems</span> <span class="field-wrapper"><span lang="" about="/user/1332" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">Ms Louise Burtt</span></span> <span class="field-wrapper">Tue, 05/21/2019 - 13:28</span> <div class="field-wrapper field field-node--field-banner-images field-name-field-banner-images field-type-image field-label-hidden"> <section class="block block-system block-system-breadcrumb-block"> <nav role="navigation" aria-labelledby="system-breadcrumb"> <span id="system-breadcrumb" class="visually-hidden">You are here</span> <ul class="oc-breadcrumb"> <li> <a href="/">Home</a> </li> <li> <a href="/taxonomy/term/2">Things To Do</a> </li> <li class="current"><a href="#"></a></li> </ul> </nav> </section> <div class="field-items tocc__herobanner"> <div class="tocc__tile tocc__tile--large field-item"> <div class="tocc__tile__image" style="background-image: url(/sites/yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/files/styles/page_banner/public/2019-05/blog%20banner.jpg?itok=0ta_IsJI);"></div> </div> </div> </div> <div> <p>As a truly local brand, with offices and team members dotted throughout Yorkshire, we thought we'd use our local knowledge to let you in on a few hidden secrets that you could discover on your next visit to Yorkshire.</p> <p><strong>Helmsley Walled Garden and Cafe </strong>suggested by <em>Michelle our Portfolio Manager</em></p> <p><span><span>If you love gardens and plants then start off with a walk around the stunning walled gardens, it’s a place you can visit time and time again as the gardens change with the seasons. There is inspiration for all gardens, small or large and a fantastic array of flowers and plants to admire, seating areas provide space to sit and reflect and just take time out in peaceful tranquillity. </span></span><span><span>When you have finished there is a plant shop to stock up and put your new found gardening ideas into practice at home. </span></span><span><span>The icing on the cake (sorry about the pun) is the best café in Helmsley, it’s worth visiting for the treacle tart alone. All baking is homemade and you’ll find some really unusual lunch dishes all served within a Victorian greenhouse or sit outside looking over the gardens.</span></span></p> <p><strong><img alt="Credit Helmsley Walled Garden" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="a3109653-7b8c-4e89-b5aa-de2662cd68ec" src="/sites/yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/files/inline-images/Helmsley%20Walled%20Garden%20credit.jpg" /></strong></p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Northwood Trail, England's Fairy Sanctuary </strong>(near York) suggested by Louise our Marketing Assistant</p> <p>Something exciting is stirring in the Yorkshire woods and you'll be able to see it from 4th June this year. This brand new visitor attraction unlike any other in England is opening in Buttercrambe near York and includes a beautiful woodland trail filled with fairy tree houses, a willow maze and a fairy museum. There's also the Northwood Kitchen, a unique cafe under the trees serving delicious natural food and drinks; a magical place to eat lunch or enjoy an organic coffee.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Saltwick Bay Beach </strong>(near Whitby), suggested by <em>Catherine our Head of Housekeeping</em></p> <p>Located off a quiet lane behind Whitby Abbey, close to Whitby Holiday Park this is a true hidden gem. Here you will get the feel of a private beach, but it is actually open to the public and there are no restrictions for dogs so your four-legged friend can join in the fun too. When the tide is all the way out you can walk around the scar at Saltwick to Tate Hill Beach in Whitby, the views are just stunning and it has the added bonus of being a sun trap too. Keep your eyes peeled you may even find a fossil or two.</p> <p><img alt="Saltwick Bay" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="3f2f928c-587f-4eeb-b3f2-9a221a864bc3" height="533" src="/sites/yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/files/inline-images/Saltwick%20Bay.png" width="711" /></p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Boggle Hole </strong>(near Robin Hood's Bay) suggested by <em>Joe our Managed Services Supervisor</em></p> <p>From Robin Hood's Bay why not walk along to discover the smuggler's cove of Boggle Hole, which can be reached via the beach at low tide or by the cliff path. Take some fresh fish with you from the local fishmonger, Bay Fisheries in Robin Hood's Bay and have a fish barbecue! But make sure you check the tide times as you don't want to get caught out. Alternatively there is a lovely dog-friendly walkers cafe set in the old mill next to the youth hostel which offers delicious treats and has a woodburning stove to warm you up when the weather is cooler.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Dry Valleys of Thixendale </strong>(Yorkshire Wolds) suggested by <em>Louise our Marketing Assistant</em></p> <p>If you love to get out and about exploring new places then why not discover the picturesque dry chalk valleys of the beautiful area of Thixendale. You could also stop by the idyllic village of Thixendale for a refreshing pint in the local pub, the Cross Keys or a hot drink and sweet treat in the lovely tea rooms. Alpine streams cascade down the limestone rocks past beautiful flora and fauna and lead to an open south facing lawned area which provides wonderful views of the adjacent fields. There's also a lovely tea rooms opposite where you can enjoy a spot of lunch before possibly moving on to explore the nearby Aysgarth Falls.</p> <p><br /><strong>Midsummer Bash </strong>(Hawes) suggested by <em>Gemma our Managed Services Supervisor</em></p> <p>Why not get your glitter and face gems out and join in the fun at this fantastic charity event. Midsummer Bash on Saturday 6th July is an outdoor music festival like no other, all set on Hawes Community Field in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. There's a host of live bands, a DJ, beer tent, food vans, children's face painting and games, fireworks, and every year there is a surprise at the end! It's a great family event and is pretty much Hawes' version of Glastonbury.</p> <p><img alt="Midsummer Bash Hawes" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="c53cc36c-a084-438e-b9fc-4477a2e6ebd9" height="201" src="/sites/yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/files/inline-images/IMG_20180708_115229_859.jpg" width="201" /></p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Riverside Walks from the Cover Bridge Inn</strong> (near Middleham) suggested by <em>Wendy our Property Recruiter</em></p> <p>This lovely picturesque walk in the countryside of mid Wensleydale takes you along the riverbank and through the stunning meadows and fields of sheep and cows all the way into Jervaulx Abbey. If you're bringing your dog on your Yorkshire break with you too they would love it here and there's fortunately a fabulous tea room at the end; the only problem is walking back after lots of cake!</p> </div> <div class="field-wrapper field field-node--field-tags field-name-field-tags field-type-entity-reference field-label-hidden"> <ul class="field-items tocc__itemlist tocc__itemlist--inline" data-prefix="Tags"> <li class="field-item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/6" hreflang="en">Attractions</a></li> <li class="field-item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/8" hreflang="en">Carnivals and Festivals</a></li> <li class="field-item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/13" hreflang="en">Activities</a></li> </ul> </div> <a href="/taxonomy/term/2" hreflang="en">Things To Do</a> Tue, 21 May 2019 13:28:41 +0000 Ms Louise Burtt 585 at http://www.yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk October Half-Term Fun! http://www.yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/blog/2018/10/october-half-term-in-yorkshire <span class="field-wrapper">October Half-Term Fun!</span> <span class="field-wrapper"><span lang="" about="/user/624" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">Kirsty Jones</span></span> <span class="field-wrapper">Mon, 10/08/2018 - 11:29</span> <div class="field-wrapper field field-node--field-banner-images field-name-field-banner-images field-type-image field-label-hidden"> <section class="block block-system block-system-breadcrumb-block"> <nav role="navigation" aria-labelledby="system-breadcrumb"> <span id="system-breadcrumb" class="visually-hidden">You are here</span> <ul class="oc-breadcrumb"> <li> <a href="/">Home</a> </li> <li> <a href="/taxonomy/term/2">Things To Do</a> </li> <li class="current"><a href="#"></a></li> </ul> </nav> </section> <div class="field-items tocc__herobanner"> <div class="tocc__tile tocc__tile--large field-item"> <div class="tocc__tile__image" style="background-image: url(/sites/yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/files/styles/page_banner/public/2018-11/octhalfterm_1.png?itok=Jmqfd-Kp);"></div> </div> </div> </div> <div> <p>October Half-Term may be just around the corner but luckily we have plenty lined up in Yorkshire to keep the kids entertained! With these year's half-term falling a little later than usual, there's a fantastic mix of Halloween themed events throughout the county, as well as the bi-annual Whitby Goth Weekend on the coast- where ever you go, you're sure at have an action-packed time in Yorkshire!</p> <h4>Yorkshire Coast</h4> <p>The coast is always sure to be a hit with the kids, a quick paddle in the cold North Sea can be rewarded by some delicious ice-cream or some warming fresh fish and chips. Scarborough's South Bay is the place to be here, spend your morning playing on the 2p slots or the arcade games, ride the ferris wheel or have fun on the dodgems before indulging in some dinky donuts!</p> <p><img alt="South Bay" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="34bad8f5-d4ce-447c-9546-5865d1c9a082" src="/sites/yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/files/inline-images/southbay1_0.jpg" /></p> <p>If you've got time, a walk along the Marine Drive will offer some fantastic sea views and take you along the coast to Scarborough's second beach: the North Bay. Here you'll find the Sea Life Centre, home to Penguin Island, plenty of seals and (if you're lucky!) you can even spot a few octopuses! Over October Half-Term you can take part in the Ascarium event, meeting Zara the witch and discovering the spooky creatures under her command.  </p> <p><img alt="Sea Life Centre" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="0e02bda2-11ca-4b84-9d6b-35e951c5d47a" src="/sites/yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/files/inline-images/sealife1_1.jpg" /></p> <div align="center" width="100%"> </div> <h4>North York Moors</h4> <p>There's also some spooky goings-on at Castle Howard this Half-Term. York's Chocolate Story unwraps the city's chocolate history, York was once home to Rowntree's Chocolates and Nestle, and sometimes you can even smell the cocoa from the factories as you walk the streets here. Take the interactive tour before sampling a little bit of York chocolate for yourself (there's also a cafe here, we recommend the hot chocolates!). Before chocolate was the Vikings!</p> <p><img alt="Chocolate Story" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="7757f935-235c-458d-b29c-0abee7acc15e" src="/sites/yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/files/inline-images/chocstory1_0.jpg" /></p> <p>In the centre of York (once known as Jorvik) you'll find Jorvik Viking Centre, one of the city's must see attractions. Sometimes when you first arrive in an area you might feel a little lost when it comes to discovering what areas you should visit but that’s why there are organisations like Discovering Britain who are here to help.</p> <p>The website is run by the Royal Geographical Society and can be found at discoveringbritain.org, they aim to give us an array of interesting facts through walks around Britain with a geographical theme. Each walk length and terrain varies so to give you the option to pick one which suits your ability. The information on a specific walk gives you facts on what you might expect to see, the landscapes, the distance, who it will be suitable for, where it starts, where it ends and how to get there.</p> <p>The site is packed full of useful information to help you plan where you might want to walk when staying in Yorkshire. Walks are split up into 3 sections; they can either be a Discovering Britain walk, a walk which they are currently producing or other recommended walks. Their own Discovering Britain walk has even more information about the route you will take, including a downloadable booklet guide and an audio guide about the area you are walking in.</p> <p>There’s an array of walks in the Yorkshire area to discover on the site, including a walk that is currently in production about discovering how the sea shaped Whitby’s landscape and people. It will be sure to follow their brilliant ethic of bringing geography and history alive and if you know of a walk that would be great to feature but it’s not there yet, why not suggest a walk to them as they’re adding new walks all the time!</p> <p>We hope you enjoy using this website to make your stay in one of our cottages even more exciting and if you haven’t booked your cottage yet why not view our selection of cottages in Yorkshire now.</p> </div> <div class="field-wrapper field field-node--field-tags field-name-field-tags field-type-entity-reference field-label-hidden"> <ul class="field-items tocc__itemlist tocc__itemlist--inline" data-prefix="Tags"> <li class="field-item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/20" hreflang="en">Walking</a></li> <li class="field-item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/18" hreflang="en">Holiday Treats</a></li> </ul> </div> <a href="/taxonomy/term/2" hreflang="en">Things To Do</a> Thu, 13 Nov 2014 08:55:18 +0000 Kirsty Jones 349 at http://www.yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk What's on this Easter..? http://www.yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/blog/2015/09/whats-easter <span class="field-wrapper">What&#039;s on this Easter..?</span> <span class="field-wrapper"><span lang="" about="/user/11" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">Ben Abbott</span></span> <span class="field-wrapper">Wed, 04/16/2014 - 17:15</span> <div class="field-wrapper field field-node--field-banner-images field-name-field-banner-images field-type-image field-label-hidden"> <section class="block block-system block-system-breadcrumb-block"> <nav role="navigation" aria-labelledby="system-breadcrumb"> <span id="system-breadcrumb" class="visually-hidden">You are here</span> <ul class="oc-breadcrumb"> <li> <a href="/">Home</a> </li> <li> <a href="/taxonomy/term/2">Things To Do</a> </li> <li class="current"><a href="#"></a></li> </ul> </nav> </section> <div class="field-items tocc__herobanner"> <div class="tocc__tile tocc__tile--large field-item"> <div class="tocc__tile__image" style="background-image: url(/sites/yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/files/styles/page_banner/public/toccimport/eastereggs.png?itok=gZQHVfDD);"></div> </div> </div> </div> <div> <p>We are all hoping for a beautiful sunny Easter break but we know that there may be times when the beach is not an option.
