Lying in the highest area of the North Pennine Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Nenthead is popular with walkers and cyclists alike. The long distance C2C cycle route goes through the village and the Pennine Way National Trail runs close by. The village has a pub that serves food and the neighbouring village of Alston provides for essentials of shopping and more places to eat. The South Tynedale Railway is a popular day out with vintage steam and diesel engines taking you on a scenic journey through the lovely Pennines countryside.
The village was built to house the miners working in the lead and silver mines in the area in the mid-1700s. Today this industrial heritage is celebrated at the Nenthead Mines Heritage Centre which is well worth a visit.
