About Northumberland

The rich history and turbulent past of England’s northernmost county makes Northumberland a fascinating place to enjoy a self catering break.

As a result of the great number of battles that have taken place here, Northumberland has more castles than any other English county having over 70 castle sites within its borders. Though some have turned to ruins over the years, many have lasted the test of time, with Bamburgh Castle being stunningly restored in the 18th century and Alnwick Castle providing the backdrop for Hogwarts School in the Harry Potter films.

Hadrian’s Wall, running for over 70 miles through Northumberland’s stunning countryside, provides fantastic insight into the area’s roman occupation over 2000 years ago with England’s most complete roman fort being found on the wall at Housesteads. Enjoy an uninterrupted walk along the entire length of the wall or take advantage one of the gentler, circular walks, taking you by the wall and through the area’s pretty villages and hamlets.

The scenic beauty of Northumberland National Park draws visitors from across the world, the picturesque Kielder Water and Forest Park, the largest dark sky park in Europe, is perfect for star-gazing and there is a variety of fantastic wildlife, fauna and flora to be seen. Towards the Scottish border you’ll find the Cheviot Hills, providing great routes for walkers, cyclists and horseriders as well as superb challenges for rock climbers.

The causeway on Northumberland’s heritage coast takes you to the holy island of Lindisfarne, occupied in 635AD by Saint Aidan who chose to found his monastery on Lindisfarne and spread the word of christianity among Northumberland’s  pagan settlers. A facsimile of the historic Lindisfarne gospels can be viewed and the island draws thousands of pilgrims a year seeking spiritual renewal.
