Thornton le Dale cottages
Thornton-le-Dale is, arguably, the most picturesque village in the North York Moors National Park. With its wide babbling beck running through the centre and chocolate box thatched cottage, this is a popular location for visitors. The village has a good selection of shops where you can get the essentials, and an excellent choice of tearooms and pubs serving food, and a locally made ice-cream parlour. Within the village is a classic car showroom where auctions are regularly held. The Thornton-le-Dale show is held on the first Wednesday of August each year. This is a brilliant day out celebrating local agricultural traditions as well as providing various entertainments.
Just a couple of miles up the road is Dalby, the Great Yorkshire Forest, where there are many way-marked trails for walkers, cyclists and mountain bikers, as well as a visitor centre with cafe, craft workshops, bike hire and children's play areas. A number of events are held here each year including some open air concerts by nationally popular artists. The market town of Pickering is just two miles away, offering a greater choice of amenities. Scarborough, Whitby and the city of York are all under an hour's drive, all well worth a day out for their rich heritage, not to mention excellent shops. If you want to do some general sightseeing, this is a good location. The North York Moors are to the north and the Yorkshire Wolds are to the south, giving a choice of contrasting landscapes.
