Area Information
Gilling East
Gilling East is a lovely, traditional Yorkshire village situated on the edge of North Yorkshire Moors in the Howardian Hills - an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is close to the market towns of Helmsley, Easingwold, Malton and Thirsk, with York just a short drive away.
The village has the Fairfax Arms Pub and Restaurant and Ampleforth Golf Club, 9 holes of parkland golf in the grounds of Gilling Castle. The Village Hall and Playground offer outdoor spaces for children of all ages and in the summer months in the Village Hall there is a Model railway, where on Sundays you may ride on the model trains.
Situated nearby, Castle Howard is a magnificent 18th century residence set within 1000 acres of breath-taking landscape of the Howardian Hills and is one of the most famous and beautiful stately homes in the country. Also worth a visit are Nunnington Hall, a picturesque manor house with organic garden; Scampston Hall and Walled Garden, one of the finest regency country houses in Yorkshire and the Dutch House in Crayke.
When staying in the area you must visit the beautiful village of Ampleforth, with the amazing Ampleforth Abbey, home to a community of Benedictine monks since 1802. Located in the vicinity, Byland Abbey was once one of the greatest monasteries in England and inspired the design of church buildings throughout the North. If peace and tranquillity are what you seek from your family day out in Yorkshire, then Rievaulx Abbey is the perfect choice.
