Egton Bridge Cottages

Egton Bridge nestles in the Esk Valley between the moorland villages of Glaisdale and Grosmont, with its twin, Egton, higher up on the valley slopes. The villages offer a good selection of pubs which serve food and are great locations for those wanting to explore the North York Moors National Park, especially on foot. There are a number of popular walks including the Esk Valley Walk and a number of circular trails taking in nearby villages. The village is split by the River Esk, with the northern part dominated by the church of St Hedda, known as the cathedral of the moors and worth visiting for its awe-inspiring interior. The quickest way across the river is to use the sets of stepping stones which provide a bit of fun for children and adults alike.

The village is the home of the quirky Egton Bridge Gooseberry Show which is held each year on the first Tuesday in August and where gooseberry growing enthusiasts have been getting together since 1800 and competing for various gooseberry records. The Egton Agricultural Show is also held each August and celebrates the farming community and local traditions with competitive classes including farm animals, show-jumping and local crafts and produce.

Nearby, Grosmont is the location of the engine sheds of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Here you can see the work that goes on to restore and preserve the railways steam and diesel engines. A little further south is Goathland which featured as the train station Hogsmeade in the Harry Potter films and is also the location for the TV series Heartbeat. The historic town of Whitby is just six miles away and a must for anyone wanting to experience a traditional fishing port steeped in history.
