Rural Lancashire is a great holiday base for lovers of the outdoors. The two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Forest of Bowland which borders the Yorkshire Dales and Arnside and Silverdale with its limestone pavements in the north, provide diverse countryside for walking, cycling and horse-riding. For mountain biking, Gisburn Forest has many miles of way-marked trails. On the western coast, the popular resorts of Blackpool, Lytham St Annes and Morecambe offer visitors a great choice of seaside attractions. Historic market towns such as Poulton-le-Fylde near the west coast and Clitheroe in the Ribble Valley have a good range of specialist shops and amenities.

Farmers' markets are popular throughout rural Lancashire and locally grown produce is a speciality of many of the excellent restaurants and cafes, as well as being the basis of many Food Festivals. Lancashire has a wealth of history waiting to be explored. With many old mill towns dotted around the valleys, there are plenty of places to visit where you can learn about this county's fascinating social history. The Museum of Lancashire and the Queen Street Mill Textile Museum are both great places to start. The Ribble Steam Railway is good for a family trip - you'll get to ride on the trains and explore the industrial heritage of the area. If you love trains, or just love nostalgia, you should take a ride on the East Lancs Railway. With its regular timetable you can explore some of Lancashire's towns and villages by train, and the fun events throughout the year will offer something to keep everyone happy.
