Surrounded by peaceful, open countryside, this three-bedroom converted barn is a wonderful retreat in North Yorkshire for up to six guests. One of four cottages in the grounds of the owner’s country house, it has a lovely home-from-home feel, with a cosy wood burner, exposed wooden beams and a sunny patio. And the lucky guests who stay here get to enjoy the shared use of a games room and a 4-acre paddock.

After a wonderful day making memories, gather in the open-plan lounge/kitchen/dining room and relax. Take a seat on one of the sofas and warm your toes in front of the wood burner as you flick through the channels on the TV. The kitchen space has everything you could need to whip up family feasts and when you’re ready to dine you can serve up at the dining table, which sits within an extension boasting floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the pretty garden. You’ll find the first of the bedrooms on the ground floor too, a king-size with an en-suite wet room and a patio door to the garden. Upstairs, are the remaining two bedrooms, a king-size with an en-suite bathroom, and a twin with an en-suite shower room. Outside, you can look forward to al fresco dining on the patio with a backdrop of mature plants. There is also a games room and a 4-acre paddock to enjoy, shared with the other properties on site.

Just 2 miles away are the cobbled alleys and ginnels of the charming fishing village of Staithes. Here, you can pick up souvenirs from the shops and galleries, dine on freshly caught seafood in one of the restaurants, or visit the fascinating Staithes Heritage Museum to learn about the village’s most famous former resident, Captain James Cook. Or if you fancy an adventure in the great outdoors, the Cleveland Way National Trail is 11.5 miles away.

A really enjoyable stay and with wonderful views from the field across the road for walking the dog. I should imagine that it would be lovely in the warmer weather to sit there looking over the valley and out to sea. All rooms were beautifully decorated and very modern appliances. You may need to use your phone as a hotspot to boost the Wifi in theRead more bedrooms, but it worked fine using this. Very hospitable host and we appreciated having a few things to start us off e.g. bin bags, washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets etc. Take-aways can be found in Loftus and supermarkets near Saltburn both about 10-15 minutes away, but local Co-op was good, too. The games room was useful and we enjoyed doing the puzzles supplied. I would recommend accessing the cottage from the A174 end as the approach from the other side was very narrow and quite tricky in places. Overall, an attentive host and everything provided that you could need. Hide

"Willow Cottage" was a real home from home, with the owner there to greet us and offer a welcome pack, always an appreciated special gesture! We discovered it was a great base from which we could enjoy our week in North Yorkshire. The cottage was beautifully warm, (there in March) and with 3 bedrooms, all en-suite, it was ideal for 2 to 6 visitorRead mores. Our 2 retriever dogs also found it comfortable and settled in easily. There was plenty of hot water, and the downstairs wet-room shower was splendid. It was great to have that downstairs bedroom, and we can definitely recommend the comfortable bed. There were just 2 of us staying, but the other bedrooms, upstairs, looked to have that lovely feeling of being in a traditional cottage. We can't vouch for the beds or bathrooms as they were not used. The location was excellent, being very near to the atmospheric coastal village, Staithes, and the lovely beaches of Skinningrove and Runswick Bay, both excellent for the dogs at low tide times. It was also within easy distance of Whitby and its famous Abbey, and not too far from Rievaulx Abbey, should you like that kind of thing. Coast and country were there in abundance to enjoy. We would highly recommend "Willow Cottage" and all it has to offer. Hide
