Escape to the countryside in this delightful stone cottage on the edge of Crook in County Durham. The pet-friendly holiday retreat sleeps four guests and is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, with a whole host of walking and cycling routes on your doorstep. After a long walk, return to your rural bolthole to unwind in the cosy lounge area or share an al fresco dinner out on the terrace. Alternatively, head into Durham (10 miles) to explore the city's excellent range of pubs and restaurants.

The stone-built cottage has a reverse-level layout, really making the most of the far-reaching countryside views. The property is decorated in a contemporary style, with neutral tones and chic furniture. Leave walking boots in the hallway on the ground floor, before climbing the wooden staircase to the open-plan lounge/kitchen/diner. This bright, sociable space has an apex roof with skylights, letting in plenty of natural light. In one corner is a stylish kitchen area for preparing meals for the group, which you can share at the breakfast bar or around the dining table. The comfortable lounge area has a selection of plush seating to sink into as you watch the Smart TV or chat about your day. Back downstairs, two inviting bedrooms - a double and a twin - await, both with calming decor and relaxing rural views. A refreshing family bathroom completes the accommodation. Immediately outside the cottage you'll find a cute bistro set for sitting with your morning coffee, and across the pathway in front of the cottage is a charming decked area for al fresco dining. The property has private parking for two cars.

Crook (1 mile) is a historic market town with a good range of local shops and eateries, as well as a weekly market where you can pick up delicious local produce for your supper. The town is known as the gateway to the walkers' paradise of Weardale, part of the North Pennines National Landscape, with its rugged moorland, winding rivers, and unspoilt villages. For history enthusiasts, a trip to the medieval city of Durham is a must. Wander amongst its cobbled streets, admiring the spectacular architecture, and pop into one of the many museums to learn all about the city's fascinating past.

Had a great weekend. The property was everything we needed (four adults, one infant and a small dog). Pub 5 minutes walk away. Good base for going into Durham or exploring Weardale and/orTeesdale. Would stay again.
