Excellent cottage for a break away for family, friends and pets. Location is dynamite if you're looking for any holiday that involves walking or visiting quaint villages in the nearby vicinity, with excellent walks in places such as Gillamoor, Helmsley, Rievaulx Abbey, Rosedale and Cropton. Done all these places before with my dog and are all sceniRead morec (rivers, streams, woodland etc.). There is a website called footpathmap.co.uk which covers the entire country, so you can view any public footpath/ bridleway etc... wherever you are thinking of staying. A nice feature of the cottage is that it has a side gate that is just on a latch so if you're dog gets muddy or damp you can enter the garden straight from the village green and wipe them down before even entering the house. Microwave and oven are both fairly easy to use (different from ours but very easy to get used to.) Freeview TV and Youtube are good to have especially in the evenings, as are the games in the lounge cupboard - Monopoly has always been a life saver on dark nights or during bad weather. Various villages nearby with pubs that do food. The sheep that hang around the village green are friendly and seem to have much more road sense than people from Wakefield (where I'm from), only problem is that the chill out outside the front door and leave deposits on the doorstep, but if you're going to stay in a cottage in the country, what did you expect!! They seemed to want to stay inbetween the house and my van at certain times of the day for the shade which I didn't mind at all. Back garden is adorable, sloping down in stages to the stream at the very bottom, which can be accessed by going out of the side gate and turning immediately left. Saw woodpeckers, a heron and jackdaws, as well as rabbits and a deer whilst on my visit. The back garden is also very secluded, with high walls and hedges - even the neighbours' upstairs windows always had the blinds down, although I don't know if this would be a permanent thing. Comfy and cosy and central to so much breathtaking countryside, couldn't fault it. Hide

The cottage is situated in a lovely village with a tea room, bakery, ice cream parlour, a few craft workshops, folk museum and a pub. Parking in front of the cottage is an asset but quite small and the road is quite noisy and busy at times . We had a fabulous stay at Hollyside Cottage which is cosy yet spacious, with comfortable sofas, as was the main bed, and a lovely big bathroom with a large, good walk-in shower. It was clean and had everything we needed. Being able to park right outside the front of the property was very useful and the garden at the rear was private and quiet withRead more good furniture. A note for dog owners though is although we found it safe for our dog, it is possible to reach the beck at the bottom so isn't escape proof! The village itself is wonderful and quiet (out of season as understand it can be very busy with tourists in summer) and the locals very friendly. The cafs were really nice as was the pub but you need to book well in advance if you want to eat there, but there are even better pubs in nearby villages, and we were told the pub will have new owners soon so things may change. It's a wonderful location for the moors, the coast and places like Castle Howard and are already planning on going back. Thanks for a wonderful stay! Hide

We really enjoyed our holiday at the cottage. Location excellent for us and dog could safety go round into back garden. I would suggest leveling the area outside the back patio area. It could be quite dangerous for older people tripping on uneven area and they could have serious injuries.
