There's always something happening throughout the town, with festivals and fairs held throughout the year. These include Whitby Folk Week and the Whitby Regatta, and there are two popular Goth festivals each year. Whitby Harbour is steeped in history and visitors can see where British explorer Captain James Cook first worked as an apprentice before setting sail and discovering Australia. A statue of this great explorer stands proudly above the town, along with some huge whalebones, a sign of the town's maritime history. The harbour is a buzz of activity, and you can enjoy early mornings watching the fishing boats come ashore before getting the first choice of their catch of the day.
