For a livelier atmosphere, the historic seaside town of Whitby is a 10-mile drive along the coast, where you can bask on golden sands or explore the ruins of the Medieval abbey that stands watch on the cliffs overlooking the town. Alternatively, head inland and explore the hills and dales of the North York Moors and discover the rugged beauty of this national park.
