Whitby, 4.5 miles away, is full of rugged, coastal charm and makes an excellent family day out. Wander amongst the cobbled streets of the old town, perusing the boutiques and galleries for souvenirs, before climbing the iconic 199 steps to St Mary’s church and the atmospheric ruins of Whitby Abbey, or taking a stroll along one of the sandy beaches. There are some beautiful coastal walks from Whitby, including the 7-mile stretch of the Cleveland Way to the picture-postcard village of Robin Hood’s Bay.
