Steeped in history, this elegant cottage boasts a secluded patio garden and is situated in a prime location for exploring the Yorkshire Moors. This romantic bolthole is perfect for outdoorsy couples or young families holidaying with a four-pawed traveller. Soak in the architectural grandeur as you step beneath the exquisite ruins of Rievaulx Abbey (9 miles) before tucking into an afternoon brew and cake snuggled in front of the crackling wood burner.

Built in the 16th century, this historic property expertly blends traditional charm and contemporary style. Enjoy rustic exposed beams, earthy neutral tones and classic country soft fabrics. Shrug off jackets at the door then be tempted into the cosy living space by the warmth of the wood burner. Stretch out weary legs on the plump sofa while Fido snoozes on the deep pile carpet by your feet. Resident chefs can rustle up a feast in the bright Shaker-style kitchen with worktop space aplenty. Top off glasses with a bottle of fizz then gather around the dining table for an intimate evening meal. Keen readers will be in their element nestled on the deep window sills with a captivating holiday novel. When the night draws in, slip into the soft sheets of an airy double with coordinated wooden furniture or the tastefully appointed single. Outside, sip a coffee perched on the bistro set on the patio surrounded by shrubs. For adventurers, rest easy knowing your kit is securely stored in the outhouse.

Admire the crumbling medieval remains of Helmsley Castle (7 miles) then swing by the interactive exhibition in the mansion house. Animal lovers will delight in bird spotting at the National Centre for Birds of Prey (7.5 miles) while leisure seekers can refresh with a sunny swim in the Helmsley Open Air Swimming Pool (7 miles).
