Bronte Country cottages

With its wild, heather moorland, dramatic, romantic landscapes and dark sandstone cliffs its no wonder the area now known as Bronte Country fueled the imaginations of the Bronte sisters to write so many of their classic novels here. Visitors to the area will be struck by the sublime beauty of the rugged, windswept moorland and desolate crags and fells and fans of the famous sisters will delight in visiting many of the locations featured in their classic works; locations such as the isolated Top Withins and grand Ponden Hall near Haworth have been featured in such famous novels as Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre.

The world-famous Bronte Parsonage Museum, where the family lived for most of their lives, can be visited in Haworth where you can discover more about the Bronte's literary legacy. Though the namesake of this area, it's not just the Bronte's who have been inspired by the landscape here and other famous literary connections in the area include the poet Ted Hughes who was born in the village of Mytholmroyd while his wife, and fellow poet and novelist, Slyvia Plath is buried in Hepstonstall. Bradford born painter David Hockey's work can be admired at Salts Mill in the historic mining village of Saltaire (a UNESCO World Heritage Centre) and art lovers will also enjoy a visit to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in nearby Wakefield where you can view the works of world-renown artists such as Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore.

This area is also fantastic walking country, whether its over the Pennine Way National Trail to the west, a visit to local landmark Stoodley Pike (a memorial to the end of the Napoleonic War) or through the valley of Hardcastle Crags where you'll find the historic Gibson's Mill, a former cotton mill dating back to the 19th century.

The quaint towns and villages of Bronte Country provide the perfect location for a relaxing getaway, with the cobbled streets and stone-built cottages giving a feeling of stepping back in time. Browse our West Yorkshire cottages in Bronte Country to find your perfect home-from-home.
