Glamping in Yorkshire

Have you ever been glamping? Well us neither; until recently. We've always loved the idea of camping in the great outdoors but weren't really sure about saying goodbye to all the home comforts that our cosy cottages have to offer. However we're always up for giving something new a try and so last weekend a few of us got together and ventured off for a night under the stars in our unique Mongolian yurts set in meadowland close to the small quaint Wensleydale village of Askrigg. The picturesque sights of the Yorkshire Dales National Park surrounded us, and the bustling market towns of Hawes, Leyburn and Northallerton were all just a short drive away.

On arrival we were amazed by the views and how comfortably furnished they were; with a bespoke hand-crafted king-size bed plus a separate chesterfield sofa bed, a wood burning stoves to cosy up in front of and each one also had its own private wet room.

"I never imagined staying in a yurt would be so luxurious! This is “Glamping” in an exceptional way with an authentic Mongolian yurt as the accommodation. It was far more spacious than I ever imagined it would be. Even though there was just Betsy, my Labrador, and me, I could easily  imagine bringing my family and still having plenty of space.

The quality of the fittings is superb and especially the hand carved bed with deep mattress meant I had the best night’s sleep. Denby crockery, deluxe coffee machine, upholstered dining chairs and leather chesterfield settee were not what I was expecting and certainly provided the “glam” part of this glamping break. The log burner was lit late in the evening but quickly heated up the yurt, and it stayed cosily warm through the night. The weather for my stay wasn’t great, but I definitely wouldn’t worry about staying in the Spring or Autumn. You don’t need sunshine to enjoy a break here. In fact there is something distinctly British about cooking on the fire pit in the evening in slightly damp weather. It was great fun and there was a brilliant atmosphere with other ‘yurters’. The shower room is superb and I loved the environmental toiletries; it adds to the experience to know that the owners have sourced local products and environmentally friendly goods.

In the morning, Jo brought my breakfast, a delicious Eggs Florentine with a little veggie bacon on the side. As a pescatarian it was great that I had so much choice. Options included a full English Vegetarian breakfast, a choice of eggs, and vegan option of avocados on toast. This was in addition to the selection of Kelloggs cereal, loaf of bread, butter and choice of jams all waiting for me in the yurt. Betsy got gravy bones, lucky girl! She also had a fab time. There was an adjacent field where she could run around for a quick walk, and a choice of walks from the yurt door, all with spectacular views of the Dale.

Would I go back? Oh yes, for a longer stay, with Betsy, with friends or with family. It is a fantastic experience and a real get-away-from-it-all break."

"Lapwing was absolutely beautiful. The yurt itself was spacious but cosy at the same time and the hot tub was an added bonus. We had everything we needed and more and loved our stay. Our yurt was the orange one. It was a wet weekend when we visited so the stove was needed. It literally took 10 mins for the yurt to warm up and it kept us cosy until morning. The hot tub was ready for us on arrival and it was a novelty to be sat in the lovely warm water while it was raining. Breakfast was delicious and we loved the fact they had used local produce. Views are stunning and the bed is one of the comfiest we have ever slept in. Would highly recommend if you are looking for somewhere as a group or as a romantic getaway."

Wendy, Property Recruiter

"WOW, WOW, WOW, what a place, our stay in Swallow Yurt was absolutely fantastic, so luxuriously furnished and I had the best nights sleep for a long time in the stunning wooden bed with the best mattress ever !!. we sat around the fire pit in the evening listening to the local wildlife and chatting away, it was almost 2 in the morning when we realised the time, such a relaxing experience. There are 5 yurts at this property, 2 of them have a hot tub, so this would be an ideal place for families or groups of friends looking to holiday together but still have their own space, the log burner made the yurt so cosy and warm. Will definitely go again with a group of my friends. Thank you Jo & Steve for making us feel welcome."

Donna, Operations Manager & Quality Assessor

"What an awesome place to stay, Barn Owl Yurt was spacious, warm, the best bed ever and high quality furniture. The views are amazing and so is the breakfast. Even in the rain it was a great experience."

Peter, Senior Operations Manager

"I stayed in Swallow Yurt and what an experience the bed was really comfy and the Yurt was furnished to a high standard gorgeous views over the Dales and thoughtfully decorated with some great finishing touches and having WiFi was a great bonus! The wood burner kept us toasty warm and the feature light fittings were stunning in the evening with the addition of twinkly lights. A really tasty full English was served to our door and some really lovely local produce was used."
