Whitby has recently been voted as Britain's Best Market Town in the BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards 2013/2014. Although Whitby is now better known for its picturesque harbour and beaches, it is great that the town has also been recognised by the Countryfile Magazine readers for its wide range of shops, cafes and restaurants which largely contribute to the town's success and value.

The Awards recognise 10 categories, whereby experts in each area are asked to draw up a short list which is then narrowed down by the readers who can vote by post or online.

In winning the competition, Whitby managed to outrank St. Ives and Oban amongst other locations.
