Things to do in Whitby in the run up to Christmas

Published: Wednesday 23rd Oct 2013

As the dark nights draw in and the air turns colder it might seem that the fun at the seaside is over for one year but with Whitby that is far from it.

The true magic, mystery and wonder of historic Whitby arguably comes out at night and this is the perfect time of year to explore the town's true character. The infamous Whitby Gothic Weekend, taking place over the first weekend of November, is perhaps the best example of this.

People from all over the world flock to Whitby to enjoy the music and live bands that play in pubs and clubs across the town.

It started 20 years ago with a small group of friends, but its popularity has grown over the years making it one of the highlights of Whitby's social calendar with people from all walks of life enjoying the freedom to express themselves.

As the countdown to Christmas inevitably kicks off there is no better way to get into the spirit than with the Victorian weekend, just down the coast from Whitby at Robin Hood's Bay.

There are no Scrooges in sight as locals don Dickensian costumes, the warm glow from festive lanterns light the streets and shop windows are trimmed up with seasonal delights.

It started in 1994 as a way of boosting trade at a quiet time of year but has developed into a village tradition and also sees an art exhibition, treasure hunt, open cottages, street entertainment and a trip back in time with some Victorian geology.

Whitby will also be getting into the festive spirit early this year as it holds its first ever Christmas market.

The town's unique variety of independent shops and businesses are getting together to display their wares once a week for a month in the run up to Christmas.

Beach huts will be turned into craft stalls, there will be festive food and drinks to keep the cold at bay and a chance to see the town at its very best.

And if after Christmas has been and gone but you want to keep up with the party atmosphere then why not head up the coastal road to the fishing village of Staithes for a three day Christmas Beer Festival which starts on 27 December?

Whether the entire family is coming along for the trip or you are looking for a cosy couple's getaway you can be sure that Ingrid Flute's Holiday Cottages will have the perfect place to stay so you can enjoy all that Whitby has to offer.
